| At Optimal Health we want you to have the best possible
health for the longest possible time. We want to help you maintain high levels of
performance and, in later life, retain the capacity to live independently. For this
reason our healthcare programme includes screening for risk of the three big killers in
later life - heart disease, stroke and cancer - as well as assessment and advice on
life-style, nutrition, hormone replacement therapy, sexual function and how to retain a
good memory and a clear head!
Cardiovascular Screen
Currently, one in five people in the UK will experience
either a heart attack or stroke during their lifetime. The extent of the risk
can be identified by the use of
non-invasive cardiovascular screening which gives important information about the state of
your heart and blood vessels. An ultrasound scan is safe and painless and can be
followed by you on a television screen It will indicate the extent of plaque
development and rate of blood flow. On the basis of this and other investigations we
are able to recommend a programme that will reduce your risk of vascular
disease.
Prostate Screen
We recommend annual prostate screening for men over the age of fifty, to distinguish
benign prostate enlargement from urinary outflow problems and cancer. With early
intervention treatment leads to a reduced mortality from prostate cancer.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
'Andropause' is a recent term describing reduced
androgen production (particularly testosterone), with symptoms in some men such as loss of
energy and well-being, aches and pains in joints, sweating attacks, impaired libido and
sexual performance. These symptoms may be reversed by androgen replacement with
testosterone and other relevant hormones. A broad-ranging blood test will provide
base-line measurements of hormones after which a review of these tests and general health
will be discussed to develope a replacement strategy.
Sexual Functioning
In our experience the ability to be sexual - as much
as sexual activity itself - is important to many men until late in life. Sexual
activity relates less to age than to the duration of a relationship. Sexual appetite
is highly variable between individuals.
If you feel that continued sexual activity is important to you, we are usually able to
help achieve satisfactory erections and intercourse.
